The 16th annual Miss You Can Do It Pageant will be held on Saturday, July 20th at 5:00PM at the Grand River Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
The Miss You Can Do It pageant is a national, non-profit pageant for girls with special needs and challenges, founded and run by Abbey Curran, Miss Iowa 2008, the first woman with a disability to ever compete at Miss USA.
The competition happens once a year and only lasts a few hours, but each contestant comes away with a treasury of amazing memories, strong friendships, and a powerful sense of accomplishment. Founder Abbey Curran was born with cerebral palsy, but it didn’t stop her from becoming the first disabled person to compete in the Miss USA pageant. By taking part in beauty pageants, which disabled people are historically excluded from, Abbey was filled with empowering confidence and the belief that she could do anything if she was willing to try.
Her goal was to provide other young girls and women born with physical challenges the same positive feelings. The Miss You Can Do It pageant has achieved this that, year after year. The pageant was the subject of an HBO documentary in which Abbey is featured. The pageant has also featured many celebrity guests in its 16-year run, with this year’s pageant hosted by Bravo’s Jenni Pulos.
The pageant has always called the Midwest home, but this is the first year that Miss You Can Do It will be held in Dubuque. Founder Abbey Curran commented, “we are so excited to be bringing Miss You Can Do It to Dubuque, and have already been greeted with a warm welcome! This will be a wonderful opportunity for girls with disabilities to not only compete in the pageant, but also to have time to meet each other and have fun in Dubuque!” Please join us for an aspirational, heartwarming event unlike anything you’ve witnessed before.
Tickets are available to the public and will be on sale at the door for $5. Be sure to join the Miss You Can Do It Pageant Facebook group for more details.
