About Miss Great Britain

Following World War Two, a number of seaside resorts around the country introduced beauty contests as attractions.

The contest began in the Summer of 1945 under the name “Bathing Beauty Queen”, organised by the Morecambe Local Council in partnership with the ‘Sunday Dispatch’ newspaper. Morecambe went on to become the home of Miss Great Britain between 1956 and 1989.

I have entered Miss Great Britain twice now in the Ms category and I love it. Our director Saffron is a former Miss Great Britain so really understands how we feel. It’s a great pageant with an ethos of women’s empowerment and solidarity. Unfortunately the venue is not disability friendly and I am disabled so unless it changes venue I won’t be able to compete again but I would recommend it to those able bodied women.
