"Guyana first gained it independence from Great Britain in 1966 and was no longer known as British Guiana. Guyana also crowned its first Miss World Title-holder, Umbilita Van Sluytman, on May 26th 1966. Umbilita started her reign as a Miss World semi-finalist and became Guyana's first placement at an international pageant. As a result of Guyana's great performance on the international stage year over year for the next eight years, Guyana holds one of the longest and most consecutive placements in the history of the Miss World Pageant."
